Yahoo has really done it this time. Black Beat L.A.'s YahooGroup vaporized, even though my start page indicated there were new messages. New Orleans Bondage and Leather Enthusiasts have also converted back to their website for their event listings (YAY!), and I suspect that their group has also been locked. I don't have direct confirmation of that yet, but it's what I suspect caused the change.

Many in the porn industry and the BDSM community rely on YahooGroups for exchanging information and social activity. However, Yahoo claims it has specific policies about adult material in YahooGroups. We have no idea what exactly those policies are, but they wield them regularly. We've lost half a dozen groups for no visible reason. They just disappear.

I have been asked by quite a few people in the community why I don't have listings for YahooGroups that don't have independent websites posting their calendars as well. This is the number one reason. Nothing is worse than losing a group's event calendar to YahooGroup's "policies." I boycott YahooGroups for ethical reasons, and I wish more people would as well. Especially those in the bdsm and leather communities. We have enough challenges without YahooGroup censorship.

There are some alternatives out there. Myspace.com seems to be created more for musicians than organizations, and that gives it a dramatic edge. Graphics play a bigger role on Myspace than on YahooGroups, and there is a lot of room to customize. Smartgroups.com isn't as radical as Myspace, but they're attracting a fair slice of the exiles from YahooGroups. Domcon, and Lair De Sade now call Smartgroups home.

Are there other options? Well, many websites are adding forums and chat rooms. Why not take the next step and add a forum to your web page? You may also want to consider some of the adult boards on Bondage.com, or thefetishforums.com. There are some real alternatives out there. Take a step out of the Y-box and have a look around.
